Distributed on-line monitoring of manufacturing systems – applying smart dust and ad hoc networking technologies.

A distributed manufacturing equipment monitoring system with self-organizing features is studied. The system comprises smart dust motes (i.e. embedded wireless information processing nodes equipped with appropriate sensors) that are able to form an ad-hoc network for data verification, fusion, and forwarding. Preliminary status of the equipment is estimated and urgent actions taken by the monitoring system, and then relayed further for final decisions to the parties managing and maintaining the equipment.
